Eric Bristow: Phil Taylor Has Still Got the Power

Rorke’s Drift would have turned out differently had Eric Bristow been returning serve when the Zulus launched their spears.

The Crafty Cockney’s aim is still so deadly his last nine-dart checkout was only three years ago in Malaysia on the exhibition circuit.

Bristow hit the bulls-eye when he turned 50 last month – but he is still a godfather of the oche whose forked tongue remains as sharp as his arrows.

So when the five-times former world champion warns that darts must not follow snooker, and become overrun by “zombies”, our portly friends in circus-tent shirts would be well-advised to listen.

Bristow, who knew his way around every checkout long before Tesco hired the Spice Girls to film a wooden TV advert, took on Mirror Sport’s Mike “Four Chins” Walters in a special challenge for lads’ mag Nuts.

In fairness, it wasn’t so much a contest as an oche horror show. But the Crafty Cockney – who discovered Phil “The Power” Taylor on the pub circuit and turned him into a 13-times legend – is still talking up his protege 17 years after the 125-1 apprentice beat the sorcerer to claim his first world championship.

No.1 seed Taylor begins his campaign to reclaim the PDC crown at Alexandra Palace on Monday, and Bristow warned: “Mark my words, Taylor will take some stopping again this year.

“He’s got a tricky draw in the first round against Michael van Gerwen. But if he gets over that first hurdle, he’ll be the man to beat – as usual. I always knew he would turn out all right, but even I’ve been surprised how many world titles he’s won, and how he keeps coming back for more.

“When he was starting out, and I took Phil around the world with me, he kept getting knocked out in the first round of tournaments and a few opponents kept asking me why I was wasting my time on him because he wasn’t going to win a penny.

“But those people aren’t laughing at him any more. Instead of living off 10 bob in the back of a campervan, he’s a millionaire and the man they all want to beat.
