Hot favourite Gary Anderson was sent crashing out of the Lakeside BDO World Championships on Sunday after a first-round defeat to teen qualifier Fabian Roosenbrand.
Number two seed Anderson, who had beaten the cream of both the BDO and PDC to lift the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy titles last year, lost 3-2 against the unknown 150-1 outsider from Holland.
Anderson missed countless doubles against his 19-year-old opponent, who took the first set.
The Scot – who counted the mighty Phil Taylor among his high-profile victims last year – levelled but then missed five doubles for the third set to fall behind again.
He clawed his way back to 2-2 but was again undone in the decider, suffering his fourth first-round defeat in the last five years.
Anderson said afterwards: “The first round is just my voodoo in this tournament. I scored well but snatched my darts when throwing for doubles. My finishing was terrible.
“I don’t know much about Fabian but even the Dutch don’t seem to know much about him – but hats off to the lad, he did well.
