Barry Hearn: BDO Winmau World Master Schedule Change “Total Lunacy”

Since the announcement of a new ‘Grand Slam of Darts’, the sport’s usual politicking has seen the tournament variously described as a chance to “discover the greatest of them all” and “not what the fans and viewers have been led to expect.”

The main bone of contention has been the timing, or more specifically the decision to move the Winmau World Masters, one of the BDO’s majors, to the first weekend of the tournament (which runs from November 17-25).

PDC chairman Barry Hearn described the decision – announced in October, eight months after the GSOD had been unveiled – as “total lunacy” as it meant BDO players have had to choose between the two tournaments.

And his claim that the tournament would “discover the greatest of them all” has been made to look somewhat hollow after BDO loyalist Martin Adams – the Lakeside champion – opted to play in Bridlington this weekend.

Frankly, Adams would have been up against it had he opted to compete in Wolverhampton but that is beside the point – and Hearn was spot on to pronounce “the people who are going to suffer are darts fans and darts players”.
