Lakeside Rematch, Draw Puts Adams Versus Nixon

Defending champion Martin Adams has been drawn against Phill Nixon in the first round of the 2008 Lakeside World Championship at Frimley Green – a repeat of last year’s memorable final.

The fourth seed stormed into a 6-0 lead but Nixon – a househusband from Durham – produced an amazing fightback to set up a deciding set.

However, Adams regained his composure to close out the match and win his first world title.

Fans’ favourite Ted Hankey, the seventh seed, will be hoping to kick-start his challenge with a win over Steve West, while top-seeded Welshman Mark Webster takes on German qualifier Michael Rosenauer.

Eighth seed Gary Robson has been handed a tough opener against former world champion Tony David.

But 2004 champion Andy Fordham, who has lost 10 stone following his health scare at the 2007 championships, failed in his bid to qualify for the tournament, which runs from January 5-13.
