“I can’t speak,” Wade told Sky Sports after being presented with the trophy and his ?50,000 winner’s cheque. “I have tried so hard for something like this for so long. It’s a dream come true.

James Wade went one better than his runner’s up spot of last season with a clinical 18-7 victory over Terry Jenkins in the final of the Stan James World Matchplay in Blackpool.

Wade lost to 13-time former world champion Phil Taylor in last year’s final but he had little trouble seeing off ‘The Bull’.

Wade shot out into a 6-1 lead and there only ever looked like one winner from there on in.

It was fitting that the 22-year-old from Aldershot should wrap up the contest with his first match point, hitting double 20 to claim his first major televised title.

Jenkins, whose consolation was a runner’s up cheque for ?20,000, added: “I thought I played well there but James was just unbelievable with his finishing ”
