Manley, the runner-up to Phil Taylor in 1999, 2006 and 2006, produced a clinical display to see off his fellow Cumbrian at Alexandra Palace in five sets.

Raymond van Barneveld kicked off the defense of his Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship with a victory on Thursday night as former World Champions Dennis Priestley and Jelle Klaasen were dumped out of the tournament at Alexandra Palace.

Van Barneveld overcame a spirited challenge from Barbados’ Anthony Forde to book his place in the second round of the tournament with a straight sets win.

Andy Hamilton overcame the pain of a foot injury to see off Dutch youngster Leroy Kwadijk 3-1 at Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship on Thursday afternoon.

Hamilton was left limping throughout his game after slipping down a flight of stairs at Alexandra Palace on Wednesday, when he visited to get a feel of the PDC’s new home ahead of his match. But he managed to land eight 180s to see off Kwadijk and book his second round berth, and will now return to his Stoke home for the Christmas break and to have checks on the injury.

PDC World Championship Wednesday Evening Roundup

Number Three Seed Terry Jenkins crashed out of the 2008 Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship to debutant Kirk Shepherd on Wednesday night. Jenkins, who has reached five televised finals in the past year, became the biggest-name casualty so far in this year’s event after allowing the qualifier to come from behind for a 3-2 victory.

Jenkins paid the price for seven missed doubles for the match in the fourth set, with Shepherd eventually taking the win. He will now meet Mick McGowan in round two, following the Irishman’s victory over fellow Dubliner Jason Barry.

PDC World Championship: Craven Wins Straight Sets Over Newton

Qualifier Jamie Caven grabbed the headlines on day three of the 2008 Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship with a straight sets victory over Wes Newton.

Leicester-based Caven dropped just four legs against Newton to book his place in round two.

The 31-year-old will now meet Wayne Mardle on Saturday in his bid to progress to the last 16.

“I’m thrilled to bits,” said Caven. “I came here to enjoy myself but I think I justified being up there.
