BDO Champions Set to Converge at Lakeside

The 2011 BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships will commence at the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green, Surrey on Saturday January 1st through Sunday January 9th, 2011.

This year’s Lakeside World Professional Men’s Champion will receive a cheque for £100,000, and the women’s World Champion will receive a record-breaking £10,000 as the total prize fund increased to £329,000 – making it the richest ever in the history of the most prestigious Championships in World Darts.

Players from over thirty countries around the globe have competed for the right to be in the final field of 32 men and 8 women in the BBC televised Championships.

There will be NINE new faces making their debuts in the First Round: Six Men (including two Seeds and two teenagers) and three Women:

MEN

STUART KELLETT (Eng) and DEAN WINSTANLEY (Eng), the No.2 and No.3 Seeds respectively; JAN DEKKER, the latest 20 year-old Dutch sensation; SHAUN GRIFFITHS (Eng), the 19 year-old reigning BDO British Teenage Champion and twice Winmau Boys Master (2007 & 2008), ARNO MERK (Germany) the youngest player in the field at just 18, and the first German player at Lakeside since Andree Welge in 2002, and Scotland’s ALAN SOUTAR.

WOMEN

PATRICIA de POUTER, the first ever Belgium lady to compete in the Women’s World Professional, and England’s LORRAINE FARLAM and WENDY REINSTADLER.

  • The 2011 Lakeside Women’s World Professional Champion will collect a record-breaking cheque for £10,000 as the total prize fund increases to £329,000.
  • The 2011 Men’s Champion will received a life-changing cheque for £100,000.
  • Stage host MARTIN FITZMAURICE, recognised around the world for his ‘Let’s Play Darts’ catchphrase, will be celebrating his 25th Anniversary year on the Lakeside stage in 2011.
  • There are two teenagers: 19 year-old SHAUN GRIFFITHS (ENG) and 18 year-old ARNO MERK (GERMANY), the youngest player at Lakeside 2011 and the first German competitor since Andree Welge in 2002.
  • In December 2010, Germany recognised darts as a sport when it was accepted into the German Olympic Sports Federation. The DDV (the German Darts Federation) won a resounding victory with other sports federations voting unanimously to accept them by a vote of 461 to Zero!
  • The oldest player is 2007 & 2010 World Champion MARTIN ADAMS, who will be 55 in June, 2011.
  • Another Scot, ALAN SOUTAR, qualified through the tough International Play-Offs, and is a fire-fighter. His hobby is running triathlons.
  • Two players hail from the same town, STEPHEN BUNTING and 2010 Lakeside runner-up DAVE CHISNALL, both from St.Helens on Merseyside.
  • Once again, there are two brothers playing at Lakeside: No.4 Seed STEVE WEST and TONY WEST.
  • MARTIN ADAMS sets a new record in 2011 as the player to have competed in more World Championships than any other – a total of 18 consecutive Lakeside World Championships since making his debut in 1994. He has an outstanding Lakeside record topped by being crowned World Champion in 2007. He was runner-up in 2005 and has reached five Semi-Finals (1995, 2002, 2006, 2008 & 2009) and three Quarter-Finals (1994, 1996 & 1999). Just a couple of months ago he made more darts history by winning the BBC televised Winmau World Masters for the third consecutive year (2008, 2009 and 2010) – equalling Bob Anderson’s hat-trick record of 1986, 1987 and 1988 Masters titles.
  • Also this year he has won the Dutch Open and BDO International Open and captained England Men to a hat-trick of International titles: BDO British Internationals, Six Nations Cup and WDF Europe Cup – in which he also won the Europe Cup Pairs title with Scott Waites. He is the longest serving England Captain (since 1993) and the most capped England darts player of all time.
  • But his greatest achievement of 2010 is that he won both the World Pro and World Masters. Only 4 other players have achieved this feat in the same year. They are:

ERIC BRISTOW 1981 and 1984.
BOB ANDERSON 1988
PHIL TAYLOR 1990
RAYMOND BARNEVELD 2005

  • BBC TV Sport will be celebrating their 34rd consecutive year as host broadcaster in 2011.
  • Lakeside will celebrate its 26th Year as host venue in 2011 and is recognised globally as ‘The Home of World Darts’.
  • 2001 was an eventful year at Lakeside…..the first ever streaker, Emma Hughes, an Oxford hairdresser, ran across the stage during the match between Shaun Greatbatch and Ted Hankey, and was memorably rebuked by Martin Fitzmaurice for having the temerity to step on the famous stage without an ID badge!
  • In the Millennium Final of 2000, Ted Hankey earned money faster than any player in World Pro history wining the final 6-0 in just 46 minutes and accumulating £1,000 per minute! His £44,000 winning cheque was augmented by a further £2,000 as he made more history by hitting the maximum 170 checkout to win the title. And just for good measure he also set a record (which still stands today) for the most maximums in the World Pro: A total of 48 in the Championship.
  • Bob Potter, OBE, and his Lakeside Complex became main title sponsor in 2004 and, since Andy Fordham became the inaugural Lakeside World Champion, the cheque for the Men’s Singles Champion has increased 100% from £50,000 in 2004 to £100,000 for the 2011 Lakeside World Professional Men’s Champion.
  • Since the late LEIGHTON REES of Wales became the very first World Professional Champion in 1978, there has been a total of twenty different Men’s World Professional Champions and, since 2001, three different Women’s World Professional Champions.
  • Debutante LORRAINE FARLAM (girlfriend of Gary Robson) is a qualified beautician.
  • Professions: STUART KELLETT is a web designer. DEAN WINSTANLEY restores cars. SCOTT WAITES & WILLY VAN DE WIEL are carpenters. SCOTT MITCHELL has his own garden landscape business. ANDY BOULTON lives up to his X-Factor nickname as a singer.
  • The Winmau Blade4 will make its debut at Lakeside (replacing the Blade 111). The new Blade4 has a new sector wiring system that is 50% thinner and will provide maximum scoring potential for the top players.
  • The only 9-dart 501 in the World Pro belongs to Paul Lim in 1990 – 20 years ago. John Boy Walton recorded the only 9-darter in the history of the Winmau World Masters in 2007, and earlier this year hit the only 9-darter ever recorded in an International tournament. It happened at the 2010 Six Nations Cup in Ireland and was made even more remarkable by the fact that John only had three practice darts and then hit the 9-darter in a one-leg game against David Smith-Hayes of Wales.

The extensive TV coverage by BBC Sport is complemented by Red Button and BBC website coverage of every dart thrown for digital TV viewers. In addition, thanks to deals signed by the BDO’s international TV distribution partner BBC Worldwide, coverage of the event will be seen throughout Europe on Eurosport, and throughout Asia on Eurosport Asia.
