Barneveld Hits a Nine Darter, But Phil Taylor Picks up the Trophy at the UK Open West Midlands Regional

PHIL TAYLOR picked up his seventh PDC Pro Tour win of 2009 with victory over Wayne Jones in the final of the Blue Square UK Open West Midlands Regional Final.

Taylor had lost in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship to Mark Walsh – his first defeat on the PDC Pro Tour this year – but bounced back in style to claim the £6,000 title.

Whoever stepped into the National Indoor Arena yesterday evening in Birmingham to take on Phil Taylor certainly wasn’t who I expected. I was under the impression it was supposed to be Raymond Van Barneveld.

Unfortunately the Dutchman failed to produce, and as a result got battered 8-2, and thoroughly deserved aswell. For the first five legs he did his best to cling on to the shirt tails of `The Power`, but both his scoring and his doubles where nowhere near good enough to worry the 14-time World Champion.

New Journey Awaits The Viking as Fordham Returns to the Oche

Andy ‘the Viking’ Fordham will begin his PDC darting adventure this weekend in the Players Championship at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, and he compares this feeling to “going to a new school.”

Fordham had success in the PDC rival organisation the BDO, winning the World Masters in 1999 and going on to take the Lakeside victory in 2004, but his career began to suffer in the wake of health problems.

Phil Taylor faces the toughest of matches to kick off the second half of his campaign when he takes on Raymond Van Barneveld at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Thursday evening.

The pair are both in good form, and the match will certainly be a little more difficult to predict this time around, whereas their first encounter seemed to be a banker Taylor win after his triumph over the Dutchman in the World Championship Final at the Alexandra Palace in January.
