ANDY SMITH won his first Players Championship for a year with a 6-4 defeat of Alan Tabern at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Haarlem on Sunday.

Smith had been victorious on the corresponding weekend last year, in Dinslaken, Germany, and repeated his success to take the £6,000 title in Holland.

The Dutchman saw off Jones to claim his maiden PDC title in March, and repeated his win to take the £6,000 title in Holland.

WES NEWTON claimed his second PDC ProTour win by defeating Andy Smith 6-2 in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship in Wigan.

The Fleetwood ace followed up last November’s victory in a Players Championship in Scotland to claim the £6,000 title at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, a win which should also ensure his place in the summer’s StanJames.com World Matchplay in Blackpool.

SIMON WHITLOCK picked up a Players Championship victory for the second successive Saturday, defeating Colin Lloyd 6-4 in the final in Derby.

Whitlock won his maiden PDC ProTour title in Barnsley a week ago, and wasted no time in adding a second victory to his roll of honour, as well as a further £6,000, with another fine showing.

BARRIE BATES won his first tournament since 2006 with a narrow 6-5 defeat of Denis Ovens in Saturday’s Players Championship final.

The Welshman picked up three titles and reached the UK Open four years ago in his most successful period of form and, having overcome his foot problems, enjoyed his best run since to claim the £6,000 title at the K2 Centre in Crawley.

He overcame some leading names in the process, defeating seeded players Co Stompe and Jamie Caven to reach the last 16, where he overcame his fellow countryman Richie Burnett 6-3.
