PHIL TAYLOR avoided a scare from Barrie Bates before starting the defence of his StanJames.com World Matchplay title with a 10-5 defeat of the Welshman at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.
The ten-time World Matchplay winner trailed Bates 5-4 after missing a host of doubles in the early legs.

PHIL TAYLOR kicked off the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival with victory in the World Cricket Championship, coming from 2-0 down to defeat Mark Walsh in the final.
The event, held in the cricket format of darts, was the first of five to be held at Las Vegas’ Tropicana Hotel from June 26-30, with $200,000 prize money on offer for over 150 players from around the world.

MARK WEBSTER made a winning debut in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship on Sunday afternoon, edging past Mark Walsh 3-2 at Alexandra Palace.
Wales’ Webster, the 2008 Lakeside Champion, moved onto the PDC circuit in February and battled to qualify for a first PDC World Championship, where he took on the world number 13 Walsh.

Mark Walsh Wins Saturday Players Championship
MARK WALSH won his third PDC Pro Tour event of 2009 with victory over Jamie Caven in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship.
Walsh followed up his victories in Coventry and Derby earlier this year with a battling display at the Barnsley Metrodome to claim the £6,000 title.
He edged out Andy Jenkins 6-5 in the quarter-finals before coming from 5-1 down to defeat Colin Lloyd in a deciding leg in the semis.
Walsh then overcame Caven in a high-quality final, which featured seven maximums in ten legs.
