The clash between the 13-time world champion and Holland’s talented teenager is the pick of the 32 first round matches at the Christmas showpiece event.

Van Gerwen through a nine-darter against Raymond van Barneveld at the Dutch Open earlier this year to underline his quality and Taylor knows he is in for a tough test.

“It’s a tough round, course it is, but it’s no tougher than anyone else because there’s some great players in the World Championship otherwise they wouldn’t be there,” Taylor told Sky Sports News.

“But Michael has got that little bit of extra talent, so I’m it’s hard for me straight away.”
